Charlize Theron belittled by a male director who made her look fuckable

Charlize Theron revealed to harper’s bazaar a “belittling” experience from her early days as an actress, in which an anonymous director made repeated attempts to make her appear more “fuckable” on set. The Oscar winner for “Monster” said one of her biggest annoyances when she was just starting out as a professional actress was that men controlled what she wore on screen.

“Having absolutely no control over what you wear is a big thing that really bothered me for years,” Theron said. “Having a guy test you almost in front of them, things like that, it’s really demeaning. When I started, there was no conversation about it. It was like, ‘This is what you’re wearing.’”

Theron continued, “I remember one movie in particular, this male director who kept bringing me back, test after test after test after… And it was so obvious that it had to do with my sexuality and how fuckable they could make me in the movie. And when I started, that was the norm.”

Fighting Hollywood’s drive to sexualize women has been a recurring theme in Theron’s career. She founded her production company, Denver & Delilah, in 2003 after her experience making “Monster” and feeling that the film’s financiers wanted “a hot lesbian movie with me and Christina Ricci” rather than the more nuanced vision the director intended. Patty Jenkins. Theron made sure “Monster” didn’t become what the financiers wanted.

“There is a natural struggle in me to want to create environments [on set] that feel like things I wish I had 30 years ago when I started,” Theron said, noting that her Netflix movie, “The Old Guard,” was filmed with an 85 percent female cast and crew. “I don’t always get it right, but I’m very conscious of looking at the big picture and saying, ‘Is this really the best we can do?’”

Theron will star in “The Old Guard 2” for Netflix, and has Netflix’s fantasy film “The School of Good and Evil” streaming on October 1. twenty-one
